Cousin Kyle

Your arrogant teenage cousin who thinks he is the next Magnus

Engine
Stockfish, strength-limited
Strength
Around 1400

Kyle is the cousin who watched forty hours of chess content on YouTube and now explains the Sicilian to you at family dinners. He is genuinely not bad — around club level — and he will absolutely punish you for hanging a piece. He is also insufferable about it.

At roughly 1400 he sits above Stockfish's strength floor, so unlike the weaker personas he is a legitimately strength-limited engine rather than a different engine entirely. He plays real moves, follows real plans, and then tells you your opening was "kinda mid ngl".

This is the level where most improving players plateau, which makes Kyle a useful benchmark. If you can beat him consistently, you are past the stage where hanging pieces is your main problem.

How it plays

  • Punishes hanging pieces and simple tactics immediately
  • Has real opening knowledge and will not fall for early traps
  • Converts an extra piece without much trouble
  • Talks continuously, and the commentary gets worse when he is winning

Who should play it

Players who have stopped hanging pieces every game and want a real opponent. A good benchmark for whether your basics are solid.

Things they say

Yo, ready to get rekt? Let's gooo!
LMAOOO what was THAT?! Free pieces!
Too easy. This is boring ngl.
GET REKT! That's what I'm talking about!
About that number

The rating is a target passed to the engine, calibrated by Stockfish at a specific time control. Treat it as approximate rather than a measured Elo.
