Rules and guidelines for using chessy.uk

Last updated: July 26, 2026

Welcome to chessy.uk. These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of the chessy.uk website and platform. By accessing or using chessy.uk you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the site.

1. Who we are

chessy.uk is a small, independent online chess platform operated from the United Kingdom. We provide free and paid chess features including online multiplayer, engine analysis, puzzles, opening training, engine arenas, and community tools.

2. Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. By creating an account you confirm that you meet this requirement. If you are under 18 you should have permission from a parent or guardian.

3. Your account

  • You may play as a guest without an account.
  • To play rated games, save progress, or use certain features you must create an account via Google Sign-In and choose a username.
  • You are responsible for keeping your account secure.
  • You may not create multiple accounts to gain an unfair advantage (multi-accounting).
  • Usernames must not be offensive, impersonate others, or contain commercial advertising.

We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. Fair Play and anti-cheat

chessy.uk is built for honest play. The following are strictly prohibited in rated games against other humans:

  • Using any chess engine, computer assistance, or external advice while playing.
  • Using opening books, endgame tablebases, or any external reference during a rated game (unless the specific mode explicitly allows it).
  • Playing on multiple accounts.
  • Intentionally manipulating ratings or results (sandbagging, boosting, arranged draws, etc.).
  • Exploiting bugs or technical issues for advantage.

We use automated technical measures (including limited client-side signals such as tab focus and interaction patterns) strictly to detect cheating and keep rated games honest. We may investigate, cancel games, adjust ratings, or ban accounts when we have reason to believe Fair Play has been violated.

Engine use is fully allowed in:

  • Engine Arena
  • Analysis mode
  • Playing against the built-in engine opponents / legends
  • Any mode clearly marked as allowing computer assistance

5. Pro subscription

Some features are available only to Pro subscribers. Pro is billed through Stripe.

  • If your Pro subscription starts with a free trial, you will not be charged if you cancel before the trial period ends.
  • You can cancel your subscription at any time from your account settings. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period (or at the end of the trial if you cancel during a trial).
  • We do not offer refunds for partial periods except where required by UK law.
  • Prices may change. We will give reasonable notice of price changes.
  • We reserve the right to change or remove Pro features.

6. Community and user content

You may post in the community forum and share game analysis. By posting content you grant us a non-exclusive licence to display it on chessy.uk.

You must not post:

  • Illegal, hateful, or harassing content
  • Spam or commercial advertising
  • Personal information of others
  • Content that infringes someone else’s rights

We may remove content and take action against accounts that break these rules.

7. Intellectual property and acceptable use

  • The chessy.uk name, logo, design, and original software are owned by us.
  • You may download and keep your own games (for example as PGN).
  • You may not use automated scripts, bots, or scrapers to access the platform, bypass rate limits, or harvest data.
  • You may not reverse-engineer the platform or attempt to disrupt its operation.

8. Availability and changes

We aim to keep chessy.uk available, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted service. We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features at any time. We may also update these Terms. If we make significant changes we will notify users (for example via a site banner or email). Continued use after changes means you accept the new Terms.

9. Disclaimer and limitation of liability

chessy.uk is provided “as is”. We make no warranties that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses.

To the maximum extent permitted by UK law:

  • We are not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss.
  • Our total liability to you for any claim arising from your use of the site is limited to the amount you have paid us in the 12 months before the claim (or £50 if you have not paid us anything).

Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.

10. Termination

You may delete your account at any time. We may suspend or permanently ban accounts that violate these Terms, especially Fair Play rules. Because finished games are shared records between two players, we may retain anonymised game data after account deletion or bans in order to preserve the integrity of ratings and opponents’ histories.

11. Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

12. Contact

If you have questions about these Terms, please use the contact form on the website.
