A personality modelled on Tigran Petrosian, world champion and the greatest defensive player who ever lived. Petrosian was famous for seeing threats several moves before they materialised and quietly removing them, to the point where spectators often could not tell what he was defending against.
The personality values king safety and prophylaxis above almost everything else. It will voluntarily give back material to remove a dangerous attacker. It will make moves that look like they achieve nothing, and then it turns out your plan no longer works.
Playing it is an unusual experience: you rarely feel like you are losing, you just gradually notice you have no way to make progress.
How it plays
- ▸Prevents threats rather than answering them
- ▸Will sacrifice the exchange to kill an attack
- ▸Almost never tactically vulnerable
- ▸Content to draw a position it cannot win
Who should play it
Learning what prophylaxis actually looks like, and practising how to break down a solid defensive position.
Things they say
Let's play a serious game. I prefer a long, maneuvering struggle.
That loosens your position. I don't need to be told twice.
The position is better. I will convert it slowly and without risk.
Accurate defense and technique decided the game.
